The Farm has been in conservation schemes since 1988. 4 ponds, re-wilded area, 2ha wood, hedgerow and shrub plantings created during that time Former excavation sites have developed their own specific species rich habitats which are monitored) Over 3 consecutive years 36 species of butterfly recorded, 147 species of bird, 22 species of dragonfly. Moths still being compiled, 7 species of orchids. There should be loads of pyramidals by time of visit - all through natural recolonization! If anyone is particularly interested there is a book written by Martin about Down Farm called A Landscape Revealed - 10,000 years on a chalk land farm.
If anyone hasn’t spoken to Mel Hardingham who wants to go please contact her as there are limited spaces.
